Conflict-Free Diamonds

Conflict diamonds - often referred to as 'blood diamonds' - have received a great deal of publicity recently, with the spotlight on this issue now even more intense due to the hollywood blockbuster movie "Blood Diamond" which was released in January 2007. Whilst diamond mines in countries such as Angola, Sierra Leone and the Democratic Republic of Congo have been fought over - resulting in massive levels of human suffering - diamonds themselves are a high value commodity which have been used in the past to fund rebel activities in these countries against legitimate governments.

The 'Kimberley Process' is a scheme initiated by the diamond industry, established in 2000, with the aim of eradicating the trade in conflict diamonds within the world diamond market. More than 60 countries are party to this agreement, which ensures that all shipments of rough diamonds being exported and crossing an international border must be accompanied by a validated Kimberley Process certificate.
